Online shopping in Zambia is not that popular especially when it comes to buying groceries because online security is questionable. Some people do it but not everybody is truly conversant with what online shopping is or even how it works. ShopZed, online store, exists to fill this gap with delivery services in Lusaka and Copperbelt provinces.
Victoria Muzumara the founder of ShopZed says the online shopping platform came up as an initiative for people in the diaspora to reduce the worry about how the family at home is coping.
“You can send money home when they say they need some groceries and at times use it for something else. So in this case, ShopZed delivers the groceries at your place thus reducing the worry,” Victoria said.
ShopZed however is a link between the people working and still want to send groceries to their homes or their relative’s homes.
The startup was founded in 2008, and now has a team of 6 people to help meet the demands of customers that buy their groceries online.
Victoria also admits the concern on security online with consideration of hackers.
She says the company understands that there are security concerns with online shopping platform which has led ShopZed to avoid clearing bank cards payments directly.
“In the early years it was quite hard to convince some people to buy groceries using ShopZed with a concern that it was Zambian so security was not trusted,” Victoria explained.
Victoria notes that making payments via PayPal is one of the major safety measures that ShopZed put in place to ensure that customer’s money is safe.
“Security concerns over personal information of our clients is safe. Our online system keeps information encrypted to avoid access by unauthorised individuals,” Said Victoria.
