Don’t have a debit card but want to pay that bill, buy something from abroad or simply brag about making an online transaction? Airtel Money now makes it possible for subscribers without bank accounts to own a virtual Mastercard.
It is of course a prepaid service linked to your existing balance in your Airtel Money Account. The card enables customers to carry out online payments at any Institution/shop that accepts Mastercard. Very important not to confuse this with Visa otherwise your transaction will NOT work. Make sure Mastercard is on the list of accepted payment gateways of whatever platform you intend on making an online transaction.
The card is virtual because you request for the card Via USSD & receive card details in an SMS and it is also not physically available. A Virtual Card Request costs K5 which will be deducted from your Airtel Money Account instantly.
To activate your Airtel Money Mastercard Virtual Card, follow the instructions below:
- Dial *778#
- Select option 5 MasterCard
- Select option 1. Virtual Cards
- Select option 1. Request New Virtual Card
- Enter Virtual Card Name (Any name to be used as Virtual Card Nickname)
- Enter PIN to confirm transaction
You will then receive an SMS stating “VCN successfully created though: The Virtual Card Number 12345678901234 with CVV 123 and expiry date MM/YYYY is generated successfully”
YOU ARE ADVISED TO NOTE DOWN THE DETAILS AND DELETE THIS SMS AFTERWARDS AND NOT SHARE YOUR VIRTUAL CARD NUMBER & CVV CODE WITH ANYONE.
A reliable source informs us that this service was launched about 3 weeks ago. As per regulation the Mastercard is valid for 3 months and you can have multiple virtual cards per account. The security standards are as per global requirements which was a prerequisite for approval to be given by Mastercard and Bank of Zambia with Stanbic Bank being the sponsoring bank behind this initiative.
This is definitely a good step in the direction of financial inclusion. For more information, visit the Airtel Money website.
